The above video is the first in a series of videos offered by Kindred Canines Dog Rescue to help pet owners train their pets in order to have a healthier relationship with them.  Trinity and Jess are the founders of Kindred Canines, and together in this video discuss the topic of leash training your dog.  Please take note of their contact information at the end of the video, or click on their link on the Environmental page.

Look for future videos from Kindred Canines here on Modesto6, and much more from our community too!

I visited the Delta Bloodbank the other day and took along my video camera to document just how easy and simple the process of donating blood is. Every pint that you donate can be used to save 3 lives, so please check out the video, and consider signing up to donate as soon as possible. Many area hospitals are in need, and your gift will help someone here in the valley survive an operation they might not have pulled through. Your blood means life to more than just you!

CVPRO, The Central valley Public Relations Organization held a Social media Roundtable on March 3rd at Community Hospice in Modesto.  Over 70 people attended, and many people were able to get answers to their social media questions.  @alexisdias,  the Chairperson of CVPRO did a great job organizing and promoting this great event.  Many connections were made, and much more was learned.  Great event!

The Future of “The Six” in Modesto 6.

After hearing about Mayor Ridenhour will be charging for the public to be present for the State of the City address, I thought it would be a good time to refocus.  We need to examine what our reliance on others is doing for us, and what we ourselves can provide to our communities through our direct involvement.  Not in politics, mind you, but as individuals with a careful eye on our neighborhoods, and what we can do to make them better, block, by block.

It has become readily apparent that we need to take actions that our government won’t.  They are only interested in serving themselves.  Send any city council person an email, and tell them you are just an average citizen with a particular concern.  See what happens.  It won’t be pretty.  Our local, state and national government are not providing for us.  That is fine.  We can do it ourselves.

To that end, I am announcing a re-branding of “The Six” Logo on Modesto6.com.  Instead of its original designation as the sixth city council district of Modesto, “The Six” will now and for the forseable future represent “The Six” ways you can get involved in your community.  They are: Youth, The Environment, Health, Crime, Government and Small Business.

The Six logo will be converted to a brand that will in the near future be distributed to Modesto small businesses that show a concern for their community in one of the five other areas of “The Six.”  The other five areas will be separate parts of Modesto6.com that will act as a clearinghouse for the good things we can do in our communities.  A yellow pages for community improvement if you will.

For example, Kindred Canines would be listed prominently in the environment area.  We would run ads for any business helping out the environmental area as well for free.  Any contact info needed to become a volunteer with kindred Canines would be available, and publicity for their upcoming events would be located there as well.  A synergy of support is needed, and I want to help create it.

Seeing The Six at various businesses will hopefully create a value for The Six, and in turn encourage businesses to get involved locally by helping people like Kindred Canines out.  Then in turn, when Kindred Canines Supporters have a choice as consumers, they can either log onto modesto6.com, or look in the shop window to see if a particular business has earned The Six.

I hope this can be a way for our community to take back the pride some say we have lost, and to gain powers we never knew we had.  I want to give us the chance.  I hope you will join me in supporting and welcoming “The Six.”  Please look for the unveiling of The Six very soon.

The best and worst of the first few days of 20-10

Dan Rogers-Modesto Six Blog

There have only been two full days in this new year, and already the mind boggles.  On New Year’s night, two Modesto firefighters were injured and our community responded.  Someone I am proud to call a friend, Trinity Balmonte took it upon herself to make some get well cards for the fallen heroes and deliver them to firehouse #5 on Briggsmore & McHenry.  She also reached out to her twitter network to get the word out that these men needed to know they are loved for the sacrifice they make every single day they go to work.

Many, many people responded, and many children made colorful get well cards and trinity went out to a local SaveMart  to pick up cards from others in the community.  Cost: zero dollars.  That is what it is about.  Doing things to say thank you for our community protectors, getting out and engaging the people of our city.  Trinity knows this.  She is becoming a powerful force in our community, and she is only getting stronger.  She already runs a dog rescue that she operates at a loss at times so that hundreds of dogs have a second chance at a respectable life.  She is awesome, and a person with whom I will be enjoying working with in the years to come.

Another person with whom I am lucky to be associated with is Carlos Rodriguez of CVRTVNews, also know as Central Valley Report.  If you don’t already know of Carlos and his amazing twitter feed, he basically monitors all polices and safety scanner traffic along with other information vital to the community.  He is an amazing source of information on a daily basis, and is someone who can be counted on in the clutch for vital information in a crisis.

Carlos not only tweets what goes on in the city and surrounding areas, he does a great job getting video of various important events captured as well.  His out of the box thinking has opened up so many different possibilities for new media within the context of creating community, that one gets the feeling that anything is possible.

Having breakfast with him this morning, I wanted to run through a wall getting to all the ideas that come from our conversations.  Funny thing is, I usually do all the talking.  Carlos is humble to a fault, but his ideas and thoughtfulness speak very loudly.  He calmly mentions things that end up being game-changers and perfect additions to existing ideas or strategies, or stand alone ideas that will change the way communities get their information.  It’s like looking into the future talking to this cat, and the future is bright!

I don’t usually speak this way about people.  I find people who gush the way I just did tend to be disingenuous and who speak out their tailpipe most of the time.  Not so this time.  I have seen these two people work, and they deserve every compliment.  They deserve your follow on twitter, and they deserve your respect. They will always have mine.

Our thoughts are with the families and crew of firehouse #5, and hope that they understand many citizens are also thinking of them and their families while they recouperate.  I am glad I was able to be a small part of the effort to recognize these brave men, and discover just how much direct engagement of your community can help.

We can talk about community, or we can get out in the streets and put ourselves on the line and engage people directly, not throwing money in a bucket, not making cool logos that have catchy slogans about helping others.  But rather getting outside and meeting people on their turf, and finding out how we can help.  We don’t need to go to an agency.  Be your own volunteer agency! We all have great minds that can produce ideas that can make a positive change for someone.  It’s a shame Nike has pattened the “Just Do It” slogan, because that’s how communities change.  You just need to go do it.  See someone who needs help?  Just feed them.  See graffiti?  Go paint over it.  Abandoned home in your hood?  Mow the lawn and park your car in the driveway!  Your community reflects your efforts.  Don’t rely on anyone else but yourself and the great things you are capable of!  Let’s do great!

Yours in committed service.

Now…

Friends, now is the time. Not for resolutions, but for continuations of our already sustained efforts. We were idled by tough times, but we never quit. We were blessed by new friends and great ideas, but never took them for granted. We see our new selves. Our better selves. But with the turn of a calendar page, we gain momentum, traction and courage. We experienced 2009. Now, as we attack another 365, make sure that 2010 will experience US! May this year give you the strength to achieve your greatest dreams, and the peace of mind to let your best ideas flow. Happy New Year!

Modesto Police Detective receives an Award

(Modesto, CA) — Modesto Police Detective Jim Rokaitis recently received an award for outstanding work at a brief ceremony at The California Alcohol Beverage Control’s (ABC) Northern Division Office in Sacramento on Tuesday, December 15, 2009.

Detective Rokaitis, as well as other distinguished officers from throughout the state, received awards for increasing safety in the communities they serve. Each year the State of California presents plaques and certificates to police officers around the State as part of the California Law Enforcement Challenge (CLEC) Awards.

ABC Director Steve Hardy presented the awards and said “it gives me great pride to hand out awards to people who put it on the line everyday to make California a safer place to live.”

Detective Rokaitis was recognized for his efforts in coordinating and overseeing a multi-agency law enforcement operation that focused on reducing underage drinking. On March 14, 2009, the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and the Modesto Police Department conducted the largest decoy shoulder tap operation in California history. The operation involved a total of 33 local law enforcement agencies and covered 10 counties throughout Northern California. A total of 171 arrests were made which included 147 misdemeanor citations and 24 felony bookings. The operation reduced underage drinking during the St. Patrick’s Day Weekend by deterring adults from furnishing alcohol to minors.

Police have released the woman’s identity in yesterday’s incident at Catherine Everett School.

WOMAN IDENTIFIED IN SCHOOL INCIDENT

Modesto, CA – Modesto Police fatally wounded a woman yesterday who entered an elementary school campus armed with a large knife. Police have released the woman’s identity.

At about 2:08 pm on Tuesday, Modesto Police were called to Catherine Everett Elementary School in northwest Modesto to investigate a woman who had walked onto the campus armed with a large knife. The first two arriving officers confronted the woman on the south side of the classroom buildings. Police believe the woman, who was still armed with the knife, charged the officers. The officers were forced to resort to deadly force. There are also reports that the woman was striking herself with the knife prior to being contacted by police.

The woman has been identified Elizabeth Catherine Kropp, a 43-year-old Modesto resident. Police believe the woman lived in close proximity to the school. The preliminary investigation suggests that Kropp had a mental health history. Though the multi-agency investigation is on-going, police are investigating the possibility that this was a “suicide by cop” scenario.

This morning, Modesto Police and Modesto City Schools administrators met with teachers and parents to provide up-to-date information and to answer questions. It remains apparent that the quick response of students, school personnel, and the responding officers averted further injuries. Well rehearsed and standardized emergency procedures ensured that the students and staff remained safe during yesterday’s incident.

Modesto Police detectives, along with personnel from the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the incident. The two involved officers remain on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Both are standard procedures in officer involved shooting incidents. The case remains an active and on-going investigation.

The officer’s names will not be released at this time. Any future release will be evaluated by the Chief of Police in accordance with departmental policy.

New LIVE vlogcast!

So, there are many things that go on that I don’t get a chance to tweet, but remain important, including giving props to those in the Twitter community who need or deserve it.  There are events in the community that need promotion.  There are things others may be curious about with regards to what I do as well (though not bloody likely).  Add to all that the fact that I have become a total addict in regards to video, and the new Ustream app for the iphone, and you have a new live vlogcast!

I have decided to host a regular video chat via Ustream and Youtube, where people can call in (209-789-5171) and offer questions or opinions, can chat with others, or just listen to me ramble.  I hope to offer content in not only a live streaming format, but also as an HD vlogcast to be posted here on the website as well!  So if you cannot see the stream, you can catch my pretty face in glorious HD after the show, and still get the same information. All you will lose is the ability to interact with me in real time.  Who knows, maybe we will do an interview or two!

While this will obviously feed my new addiction, my primary purpose will always be to inform about our community.  Modesto is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.  I want to share how we can make it better, and connect with each other in different ways that suit each of us.  Only through that will our community be able to strengthen and produce even greater things.

I will update via twitter and facebook as to when I will be beginning the Vlog, with plenty of lead time to rearrange your schedules.  Initial vlogcast will probably be on the order of 20 minutes or so, so stay tuned!  Thanks for all your support.
