The Future of “The Six” in Modesto 6.
After hearing about Mayor Ridenhour will be charging for the public to be present for the State of the City address, I thought it would be a good time to refocus. We need to examine what our reliance on others is doing for us, and what we ourselves can provide to our communities through our direct involvement. Not in politics, mind you, but as individuals with a careful eye on our neighborhoods, and what we can do to make them better, block, by block.
It has become readily apparent that we need to take actions that our government won’t. They are only interested in serving themselves. Send any city council person an email, and tell them you are just an average citizen with a particular concern. See what happens. It won’t be pretty. Our local, state and national government are not providing for us. That is fine. We can do it ourselves.
To that end, I am announcing a re-branding of “The Six” Logo on Modesto6.com. Instead of its original designation as the sixth city council district of Modesto, “The Six” will now and for the forseable future represent “The Six” ways you can get involved in your community. They are: Youth, The Environment, Health, Crime, Government and Small Business.
The Six logo will be converted to a brand that will in the near future be distributed to Modesto small businesses that show a concern for their community in one of the five other areas of “The Six.” The other five areas will be separate parts of Modesto6.com that will act as a clearinghouse for the good things we can do in our communities. A yellow pages for community improvement if you will.
For example, Kindred Canines would be listed prominently in the environment area. We would run ads for any business helping out the environmental area as well for free. Any contact info needed to become a volunteer with kindred Canines would be available, and publicity for their upcoming events would be located there as well. A synergy of support is needed, and I want to help create it.
Seeing The Six at various businesses will hopefully create a value for The Six, and in turn encourage businesses to get involved locally by helping people like Kindred Canines out. Then in turn, when Kindred Canines Supporters have a choice as consumers, they can either log onto modesto6.com, or look in the shop window to see if a particular business has earned The Six.
I hope this can be a way for our community to take back the pride some say we have lost, and to gain powers we never knew we had. I want to give us the chance. I hope you will join me in supporting and welcoming “The Six.” Please look for the unveiling of The Six very soon.
